Attention!
You’ve just reached a beautiful countdown.
I took a hiatus from writing because of school, work and life changes. Of course, that sounds very general and straightforward…but I graduated in June and now we’re quarantined. In the time we’ve spent quarantined, I have made time for a Press Kit/EP, celebrating my birthday, watching most precincts in America burn to the ground on Youtube Live; this year (2020) has been quite a searing time.
While keeping up with social media and the protests/riots that are occurring globally for different reasons, I noticed that I could become constructive/helpful at this time. For a few months, like many other creators, I took a quiet moment away from all of the traumatic events and asked myself, “What could I display that we could all benefit from? What’s empowering but not too isolating?”
Well.
Without further ado,
Whether you’re into fine dining, fashion or art — there is something on this list for you. In no particular order, we go through brands and services that are owned by Black entrepreneurs, investors, builders and inventors who are open to giving exposure to not only Black influence/creatives but EQUALLY, people who are not of the same origin. In this article, we celebrate the first edition of 101 different owners of ingenuity and craftsmanship!

96. TEN TO ONE
As someone born and raised in the Caribbean, I’ve been a student of rum, and its place within a myriad of settings, my entire life. With this has come a deep sense of appreciation for both the heritage of rum, as well as the broader role that it plays in contemporary Caribbean culture. In the US, I believe that there is an enormous opportunity to further elevate the conversation around rum – not only by introducing a high-quality spirit to market but by broadening and challenging the current perception around rum and the occasions for which it might be considered the spirit of choice for today’s consumer.
For us, this means embracing a mission to create a contemporary and elevated blend, designed to challenge expectations, and reinvigorate the way people taste, experience, and talk about rum. And so we’re here to bring you something different… and we invite you to join us on that journey. — Marc Farrell is the CEO/Founder

Designer and founder of SELFISH swimwear, Naomie Caron, always thought there was a better way of doing fashion. So firstly, by producing high-quality swimwear using nylon imported from Italy, lining every model, and guaranteeing the stitches for a year, the products will certainly pass the test of time. "your face is your brand"
Childhood friends Tim and Jarrett began wearing glasses in 2013; Tim out of necessity and Jarrett for accessory. Adopting the new look brought about new and unexpected changes in their social lives. Their identities were now largely associated with their eyewear. Sharing those experiences inspired the friends to design their own glasses with a unique philosophy.
We believe that your face is your brand. While glasses are primarily a functional medical device, how they look and feel to others has substantial meaning and everlasting effect. 65. Archer Home Designs
ArcherHomeDesigns was born from a desire to create a beautiful home while facing the reality of a limited budget. For the first few years of our marriage, we rented furnished apartments. When we signed the closing papers on our first home, we had nothing but the keys, our clothes, and an empty house. When we thought that our small bank balance was going to be a disadvantage, to our surprise, it became a huge gift. We completely remodelled our kitchen for under $300, we delved into the world of thrift shopping, found our knack for refurbishing discarded pieces, and then we discovered that we could also make furniture for our home. What was a necessary effort to furnish our home gave birth to a passion for designing rustic, wood-made home decor pieces.
Family comes first and a beautiful home sets the tone for beautiful relationships, and it is our hope to share what we do with you while enjoying our passion of also creating beautiful decor pieces for your home. Please enjoy our passion and thank you for buying homemade!

Coalition Properties Group was founded in 2019 with a simple goal: to be the bridge to the community for all things real estate, lifestyle and wealth-building. Harrison Beacher, Ryan Butler, and Keith James had moved in the same circles for years. Through university, Greek life and cultural roots, they had always found connections. Working at Keller Williams real estate brokerage, the three continued to bounce ideas off each other, refer clients to one another, and constantly push each other to be better. All three were talented agents with strong teams and loyal client bases, but each had his own unique strengths. It seemed inevitable that they would join forces.
With Harrison’s passion for client engagement, Ryan’s business operations savvy and Keith’s unparalleled customer service, they would create something much bigger than themselves. Thus Coalition Properties Group was born. With a handful of agents and admin operators, we began as a humble team of 6 and have continued to grow. Our vision of community organization and wealth building is only getting bigger.
51. Michele Foods
In 1984 Michele began to manufacture her specialty breakfast syrups and Michele Foods was born. That same year, Michele secured the top two largest retail chains in the Chicagoland area, which took her out of the basement and into 400 retail chains. She went on to become the 1st minority supplier for Denny’s, the 1st minority supplier for Wal-Mart and over the years she has partnered with some of the most respected food companies in the world – General Mills and Sara Lee. It was Michele’s determination to leave a legacy for her daughters instead of just a recipe that was the inspiration for Michele Foods.
Michele laughs when she recalls her early struggles and countless mistakes. She overcame incredible odds to turn this family secret into a formula for success. “There were no mentors for an African American female entrepreneur in the food industry in those days. I had to learn from my mistakes. Had I not been naïve, I may not have started this journey. All I had going for me was my goal and a commitment to making it work.”
Today the products can be found in the top retail chains, more than 8,000 stores nationwide, including Kroger, Albertson’s, Jewel Foods, Publix, Safeway and the like. The recipe that started it all is known as Michele’s Honey Crème Syrup, a rich, creamy confection made with honey, cream and butter. Now, in addition to the original Honey Crème, there’s Michele’s Butter Pecan and Maple Crème Syrups. These days the syrups are more than just for waffles and pancakes, they are used by cooks as condiments and in sweet and savory dishes. This family tradition for over 4 generations is simply “good over everything”!

48. The Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL)
The Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL), formed in March 1996, is a national network of law professionals and individuals committed to reinvesting in the community. CABL’s continuing goal is to bring together law professionals and other interested members of the community from across Canada to cultivate and maintain The Association of Black professionals in Canada.
The birth of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers was inspired by the existence and prior experience of two quite different black lawyers organizations, the Delos Davis Law Guild of Ontario (DDLG) and the National Bar Association (NBA), the US national association for black lawyers. The DDLG, which is no longer active, was Ontario’s first known provincial bar association dedicated to the needs of Black lawyers and judges. The work of DDLG’s members had a positive impact on the founders of CABL who followed in the tradition of the DDLG and wanted to form a national organization of Black lawyers across Canada.
The NBA is the largest national association of predominantly African American lawyers and judges in the United States. Established in 1925, the NBA represents a professional network of over 20,000 lawyers, judges, educators and law students.

34. CURLBOX
I “went natural” more than 15 years ago and remember driving 20 miles to buy an expensive product that I read “worked on everyone.” I tried using that product several times, several ways only to find out it didn’t work for me and it sat under my sink for years. I started curlBOX as a means to save you the drive and the money. curlBOX gives women the opportunity to try several products for the price of one!

33. Coddle
When I was expecting my first child I read a lot about what to expect during pregnancy. I even went as far as buying the 1000-page Mayo Clinic Book of Pregnancy and Baby’s First Year. What I didn't read about was; what to expect after giving birth and how to care for myself during recovery.
During postpartum, I was clueless about the realities. I lost so much blood during my c-section surgery that I was diagnosed with postpartum anemia and had to get a blood transfusion. I wasn’t prepared for how completely immobile a c-section makes you. I never imagined it would hurt like hell or that I would cry the first time I tried to walk. No one mentioned the sheer exhaustion that happens in the first few days home. I didn’t know you could have postpartum ailments; I had an umbilical hernia.
With all my unexpected ailments, I missed my hospital stay when I got home. At the hospital, the nurses were at my beck and call with a push of a button. I was pampered with bite-size products that made my recovery less painful. But when I got home the reality hit me, I was out of supplies, in a lot of pain and on my own.
It’s because of all these experiences that CODDLE was born. — Ruth Martin-Gordon Founder/CEO

Our full-service interior design team provides interior therapy for your home infusing our combined 32 years of design acumen and refined style. We explore how personal aspects of your life are reflected in the state of your living environment, and how in turn your physical environment is affecting the major tenants of your life- from your career, health, well-being and relationships.
Much like a therapist might analyze your life experiences affecting your present state and provide tools to handle the emotional aspects of your life, we take a similar approach in exploring areas of your home life as a mirror to your present state. We then create design solutions to remove the physical and energetic obstacles in your space that are preventing growth and a greater sense of fulfillment. We leave you with a harmonized home that creates improved balance and well-being.
For the individual, our resident crystal expert works one on one or in private groups to show you how to balance the energetic body through the use of crystals. These are powerful aids in creating a balanced mind and body and their use in healing goes far back to ancient times. Most simply they can aid in meditation, but their magic lies much deeper. Whether the need is to calm and relax, to energize and ignite ideas or to heal old wounds, crystals can help to open up the pathways to lead you to greater achievements and an overall stronger sense of self.
25. Magnolia Chocolatier
I started my love for chocolate making in the early ’90s in Stamford, Connecticut, USA (where I grew up) after making character cakes for children’s birthday parties and small cakes for functions. I was a supplier of party and wedding items and decorated for those events. After discovering chocolate making items at a nearby cake supply store, I decided to embark on the journey of chocolate making. I also brought that love of chocolate making with me back to Barbados a few years ago, and now make chocolate both in the United States and in Barbados.
My journey started early in my childhood, however. My mum, sister, and brother worked for the “sweetie factory” (Caribbean Confectionery Company) for years during my childhood; mum used to make ice cream blocks; dad made turnovers and jam puffs; and dear Granny made everything from fudge to drinking chocolate, to the best sugar cakes ever. Both my maternal and paternal grandparents and my parents owned several stores as I was growing up, so that sweet entrepreneurial spirit is and has always been in my blood.

12. Zach and Zoe's Sweet Bee Farm
We are often asked how we got started with beekeeping. Our journey with bees began largely when we moved to Hunterdon County from Montclair, nearly four years ago. Zach, our youngest child, has asthma and suffered from very bad seasonal allergies, which naturally worsened when we moved to Kingwood Township and its rural surroundings. We searched for a number of remedies to alleviate his allergic reaction which significantly increased in the Spring and Fall seasons.
We are always cautious about prescribing medicines for the children and often seek out natural treatments whenever possible. We read about the many benefits of local, raw honey and that honey can help prevent allergies. The concept is called immunotherapy and the philosophy is to strategically expose your body to the element you are allergic to, which over time should make you less sensitive to it. In this case, raw honey, named this because it has not been filtered or heated, contains pollen and the body becomes more tolerant of pollen, thus reducing your allergic reaction.
